History

Coming up with an idea

Doordash started with a very simple mission: every business can deliver. When 4 Stanford students namely: Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore were in a macaroon restaurant getting feedback about the application they had just designed.

They say about this story:

Our story began back in the fall of 2012 at a small macaroon store in downtown Palo Alto. The four of us were working on building technology for small business owners and getting feedback on an app we’d built. We spent a long time talking with Chloe, the store manager and learning about her day-to-day life. But in the end, our app didn’t solve her most important problems.

When these 4 friends decided to leave Chloe’s restaurant, she burst out and showed them a thick booklet filled with a list of customers’ orders. The main problem was that Chloe had to deliver all these orders alone because she has no drivers to fulfill them.

This simple sentence from Chloe led to Doordash’s idea

First Years

After Ali’s words, Tony Xu and his friends interviewed more than 200 small businesses and heard the same words as Ali. One of the problems they encountered at the very beginning was that all 4 of them lived in big cities and food delivery was common in those cities, and the city where there was no food delivery restaurant was Palo Alto, so on January 12, 2013, Palo Alto Delivery was born.

Let’s hear part of the early days of Palo alto delivery in their own words:

“Half an hour later, we got a phone call — it was our first order! The next thing we knew, we were delivering food every single day all over the Stanford campus. We were students by day and delivery drivers by night. We learned so much as drivers that we now have every team member start as a driver in their first week at our company. We later changed our name to DoorDash in June.

When we first started, we were trying to solve our problem of getting food delivered. But soon, it grew quickly within the Stanford community and beyond. We found out that many families and office workers in the area have the same problem. When we deliver food, it’s as much about delivering happiness as it is about bringing convenience.”

3 months after the launch, Doordash received $120,000 in seed money from Y Combinator in exchange for a 7% stake. Doordash continued to progress in the food delivery industry in 2019, DoorDash was the largest food delivery provider in the U.S., as measured by consumer spending.
