In the past few years, people went through a lot with the pandemic and such. Many easy tasks had become the worst nightmare. But technology helped us through those difficult times. Many major companies have developed last mile delivery robots to do the tasks we couldn’t do any more with no human interactions. Here’s the story of how robots helped us in delivery.
History of robot delivery
Before the last-mile robot delivery was a thing, robots were used in hotels for room service.
In late 2014, a room service robot named Relay was introduced by a robotics startup company, Savioke. When a customer placed an order, the staff would put the items in the robot and it would deliver them to the customer. Those were the first deliveries that happened with robots.
Autonomous robots in delivery
After that, companies have been trying to build robots secure enough for last-mile delivery.
World’s first robot package delivery launched on October 31, 2018, by Starship company.
As the Starship company announced its launch, they reported that Starship’s service gives consumers complete control over when their packages arrive so that packages are never left unattended.
Benefits of autonomous robot delivery
According to August’s Home Package Theft Report, victims of package theft are spending on average $200+ to replace each package and a study by Shorr Packaging Corp found that 41% of respondents avoided purchasing online goods like electronics because they feared packages would be stolen.
With delivery robots, these costs and thefts will be close to nothing. Besides that, robot delivery would reduce pollution and be good for the environment.
Another great benefit of a robot delivering your package is that whenever you’re not at home, it can wait by your door waiting for you to come back. Isn’t it the best thing ever?
Other than the obvious things a robot can deliver, robots can be used in hotels and hospitals too. They can carry a customer’s luggage to their room or deliver room service to a customer’s room. And in the case of hospitals, they can bring medicine and food to patients or carry their laundry to the hospital’s laundry room.
Which companies are the boss when it comes to autonomous robot delivery?
As mentioned before, Starship company is the king of robot delivery. After announcing their launch, many companies have joined the game. Here’s a list of companies that are pioneers in this industry.
Starship Technologies offers autonomous robots for stores, restaurants, and campuses. Their robots can carry items within a 4-mile radius. Groceries and food are directly delivered from stores, at the time that the customer requests via a mobile app. Once ordered the robots’ entire journey and location can be monitored on a smartphone.
At first, Kiwibot provided food deliveries for the University of California, Berkeley. Now, they have expanded their delivery to San Jose, Miami-Dade County, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. Since its start in 2017, Kiwibot has made over 150,000 deliveries. Its goal is to bring the cost of delivery down as low as possible and ensure that any product purchased can be delivered within an hour or less.
Nuro is much bigger than other autonomous robots in delivery and it is an advantage. It has more space and a very thoughtful design. Nuro is designed to operate exclusively on public roads just like other cars and trucks and is not a sidewalk or bike lane robot. If you want to use Nuro for your delivery, you should download the app and place a delivery order with one of their partners in their app. After that, they will text you a tracking link and an access code for you to collect your package.
Postmates is a food delivery company owned by Uber that has developed delivery robots. The robot, which Postmates says can carry 50 lb and travel 30 miles on a single charge, will join more than 350,000 people who deliver food for the company. Customers receive their meals by using a touchscreen on the rover.
It’s interesting how much can technology help our systems. With technology everything is going to change, there is no doubt about that. All we know is that a lot of robots are going to join us in the delivery business and fasten the job more than we could ever imagine.
